The Department of Home Affairs is launching its E-channel pilot project at Gallagher Estate in Midrand, Johannesburg, on Thursday.
The project is set to provide an alternative platform for clients who wish to apply for the ID smartcards and passports online.
The process will take two weeks from application to collection.
The department says this will also assist with the voter registration process which is set to take place again, this weekend.
“We are launching what we call an E-home affairs in terms of this new application and piloting this process has been successful. We are working towards ensuring that we roll out this application more especially to our home affairs offices because what we trying to do is make it easy to apply for ones ID documents. Technology is now an enabler and it can be secured that enables people to apply for documents without having to go to Home Affairs,” says Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba.
